INFORMATION

Registration

Opens Monday 2nd December 2019 - Closes 29th February 2020.

Early registration is strongly encouraged, to give you the best chance of inclusion and to assist us with planning and co-ordination.


Fee $375.00

$100 deposit with registration, remaining $275.00 payable by 2nd May 2020.

Deposit is non-refundable unless the application is declined. If the full registration fee is not received by 2nd May, your registration will be cancelled.

Failure to pay the full registration fee will result in forfeiture of the deposit.

Playing ability

Open to Adults 18 and over. Minimum AMEB grade 7 or equivalent.

2 Flutes (Picc), 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 4 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Timpani, Percussion, and Strings.


The Marriage of Figaro Overture

2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns, 2 Trumpets, Timpani, and Strings.


Beethoven Symphony No.5 Op.67

Piccolo (4th Mvt only), 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets (A & Bb), 2 Bassoons, Contrabassoon (4th Mvt only), 2 Horns, 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Timpani, and Strings.


Preparation

All parts are obtainable from the IMSLP website (https://imslp.org). Bowings will be scored by your concert master for the rehearsals. The repertoire is exciting but challenging so please ensure you arrive fully conversant with your part.

Schedule

Thursday 8.00am – 9.00am Registration and Welcome

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning rehearsals and breaks are as follows:

Rehearsal 9.00am – 10.30am

Morning tea break 10.30am – 11.00am

Rehearsal 11.00am – 12.30pm

Lunch break 12.30pm – 1.45pm

Rehearsal 1.45pm – 3.15pm

Afternoon tea break 3.15pm – 3.45pm

Rehearsal 3.45pm – 5.15pm

Concert: Sunday 2.00pm start; 4.45pm (approx.) finish.   There will be one 30-minute interval.


Catering

Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will be provided each day.

A complimentary group dinner will be held at The Pier Restaurant, Sir Leslie Thiess Drive, Townsville on Friday evening for all participants; a cash bar will be available.

**Please notify us of any dietary requirements, so that we may assist you during rehearsals and the group dinner.**


Venues & Location

Rehearsals and Concert will be held at the Sir George Kneipp Auditorium, James Cook University Douglas Campus, is located to the south west of Townsville; 11.6 km from the CBD and 10.2 km from the airport.

For participants staying at JCU accommodation we will provide transport to and from the group dinner on the Friday evening.


Accommodation

If required we can arrange full board accommodation for $108 per night at JCU Halls of Residence,  close to the rehearsal and performance venues.   Please notify us of nights required; we will bill you for the accommodation. This accommodation consists of a single room with fridge, Wi-Fi, TV, king size single bed, ensuite.  All meals are in the nearby dining room.


There are plenty of other accommodation options available. Transport to and from the venue will be the responsibility of guests not staying on campus.


Parking and Access

The Halls of Residence and venues are all on the main JCU campus entry road.  They are close together and ample parking is available.


Photos

Photographs will be taken throughout the winter school and will be available for download by participants.

Will be supplied -  please wear them.


Dress

For rehearsals – informal

For group dinner – smart casual

For concert – All players in plain stage black, black enclosed footwear.  Ladies:  black slacks or long black skirt length, no jewellery.  Gentlemen: black long

or short sleeved shirts; no ties unless black or grey.


Health

Participants with a disability or medical issues requiring support should notify us so that we can assist. Please notify us of any dietary requirements.

Following in the footsteps of the Cairns Winter School, we are proud to host the second Winter School in Townsville, Tropical North Queensland. Open to adult musicians locally, nationally and internationally, the program offers participants a stimulating and challenging intensive orchestral workshop culminating in a public concert on Sunday afternoon.


Featuring the esteemed international conductor Mark Eager and violinist virtuoso Yebin Yoo, the program will feature the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Dvorak Slavonic Dance No. 8 Op. 46, Mozart The Marriage of Figaro Overture and Beethoven Symphony No. 5 Op. 67.

The event will be held at James Cook University Douglas Campus, with accommodation options available on site for out of town guests if desired. The event is fully catered including morning and afternoon tea, lunch and a featured dinner at The Pier Restaurant on Friday night.

If registrations for an instrument exceed the available places, applicants will be accepted in order of application, unless special circumstances apply. Registrations will be reviewed and updated at three-weekly intervals. Players will be notified individually, and a player list will be published on the website.

Players are expected to have parts fully prepared prior to attending.


Conductor Mark Eager:










Mark was the conductor at past Cairns Winter Schools and the 2019 Townsville school. He is a passionate teacher who regularly tours the world as a guest conductor and master class consultant. He is principal conductor of the Welsh Sinfonia. For more information visit www.markeager.com


Soloist Yebin Yoo:  











Yebin is a very talented and exciting emerging Australian violinist. Melbourne-based, she is the youngest ever winner of the Gisborne International Music Competition, amongst many other awards. She is now studying at the prestigious New England Conservatorium of Music, Boston USA. Yebin appears with us with the support of the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition, as winner of the John Hopkins Fellowship Performance award.

If the places for your instrument are already filled, you can request placement on a reserve list in case of cancellation. Your deposit will be refunded unless you receive a place.
